In 2011, I found myself stepping onto the transformative path of yoga. The allure of transitioning gracefully between poses, the challenge it presented, and the deep self-connection it fostered captivated me from the outset. With each practice, I found myself drawn deeper into this invigorating discipline.
My initial experiences were a blend of challenges and revelations. Some poses called for a swift exit, while in others, I found solace, wishing to linger longer. Yoga pushed my muscles in new and unexpected ways, rendering my body more flexible and resilient with every session. As weeks turned into months, the seemingly impossible became achievable—I could touch my toes in forward bends and found rest in downward dog.
The heart of my practice became the rhythmic flow of sun salutations, transcending mere physical exercise to become a moving meditation. My commitment was unwavering, practicing thrice weekly at my local fitness facility under the guidance of three distinct teachers.
A pivotal moment came when one of my instructors began teaching at a nearby studio and offered me an opportunity to assist with student check-ins in exchange for free classes. This opened doors to new teachers and diverse class types, enriching my practice and broadening my perspectives.
One memorable incident further fueled my passion. When a class at the fitness facility was unexpectedly canceled, I took the lead, guiding fellow practitioners through sequences from memory. This experience planted the seed of becoming a yoga instructor.
Encouraged by my mentors, I pursued this newfound aspiration upon relocating to Washington. Enrolling in a 200-hour yoga teacher training (YTT) program at Firefly Yoga in Olympia was a pivotal step towards realizing my dream. Two months after the program, I began teaching Beginner's Yoga at Firefly's newly opened second studio in Lacey. As time progressed, I took over a Restorative class, taught Slow Flow Vinyasa, Yin, Chair Yoga, and even conducted a Beginner's Yoga series.
My journey didn’t stop there. I completed a 300-hour YTT, deepening my understanding and refining my teaching techniques. Witnessing my students evolve in their practice, much like I did, fills me with joy. Guiding them toward safe alignment and personal growth echoes the very essence of how my own yoga journey unfolded.
Alongside studio teaching, I felt a strong pull to bring yoga directly to my community in Aberdeen. Setting up classes in my home became a way to bridge gaps and offer the practice to those eager to experience its benefits. Sharing yoga with my local community became a fulfilling endeavor, fostering connections and wellness right at home.
Through my experiences, I've come to appreciate the profound impact yoga can have on individuals. It's not just about physical prowess; it's a journey of self-discovery, nurturing personal growth, and fostering connections. My path from a dedicated practitioner to a passionate instructor, bridging communities through yoga, is a testament to the transformative power of this ancient practice.
As I continue on this path, my goal remains clear: to share the transformative power of yoga, enabling others to embark on their unique journeys of self-discovery, just as I did.
